Talking Art in the Upper Mountains
Talking Art | Podcast 05 | Victor Paralta The Process of Portrait Painting
Victor Peralta stepped in at short notice for our March Talking Art meeting. Victor and Sharon Peralta co-direct GalleryONE88 in Katoomba and are active in promoting arts in the mountains. Victor is also an experienced artist, and spoke with us about his process of portrait painting. He brought several of his large portraits of local Katoomba Street identities. It was a refreshingly warm and open conversation.
Talking Art | Podcast 04 RolandHemmert ‘Spirit of Place’
At our February meeting we were privileged to hear from Roland Hemmert, local artist, philosopher and nature lover. Roland spoke of the ability of the natural world to speak into our inner being, and as artists we respond through our experience of that speaking.
Our January theme was ‘The Unexpected’. We heard from three artists – Judith Martinez, Moti, and Peter Damo – in conversation, followed by an open invitation to join the conversation. Judith Martinez is a local artist involved in sites of memory research. Her area of interest is pre- and post-Franco Spain and invisible family histories. She is a Master of Philosophy candidate at UNSW. Moti is a Swiss artist who recently completed an artist-in-residence at BigCi, Bilpin. Peter Damo is a local photographer and Talking Art team member. Each artist was invited to address how the unexpected has informed or challenged their art-making practice.
In the Upper Mountains we gather on the first Saturday of each month at 4pm in the Carrington Hotel library. We have a varying program of guest artists and themed conversations. Please visit www.talkingart.com.au to hear podcasts of recent conversations.
Our April meeting will be adjusted to enable people to go to Wild Mountain Collective’s Celebrating Trees, with well known environmental artists Janet Laurence and Juliet Fowler Smith. This event is on the 6 April, 2–4pm. We will follow up with drinks at the Carrington from 4pm.
